In Search of God

Tuning into a TV program sporting The Face – Kings of Leon last week got me thinking. The program is called In Search of God and features 3 Dutch Celeb’s which are facilitated with a number of conversations and travels that should help them find God. Or at least give a nudge in that general direction or other.

I found the program to be most intriguing and turns out to probably be my favorite show of the year (next to the Big C, which is also deserves a great mention here). So let me tell you why I found it to be good and why I’ve come to like but also what it forced me to think about.

First of, the show was brutally honest. Naked television that is okay with emotional silence but also knows the art of listening in stead of bombarding people with questions (e.g. De Wereld Draait Door a dutch talk show). Second it featured interesting people amongst which are the extravagant Gordon, the sincere and stoic Judo World Champion Dennis v.d. Geest and the lovely, intelligent Lizelotte van Dijk. These people have it made, they do not necessarily need the extra airtime, they are just in search of something more in life.

The show lets these celebrities talk to other interesting people (e.g. Paul Young author of ‘the Shack’) and also slightly less interesting people, but that’s not the point. What I saw in the faces of these ‘Seekers’ was the willingness to listen, but also the eagerness to get to the point and the core. The people that they came in contact with often did not listen and just bombarded the people with the things they believe in. Whenever there was the slightest hint of this happening you saw the wall were drawn up and the ‘Seeker’ did not listen.

Makes me wonder why we always feel we are right and why we feel we have to bother people with our opinions. Food for thought anyways.
